If you are buying property in Phuket, a Thai bank account is functionally required. You need it to receive the FET form documenting your foreign currency transfer, to pay property management fees, utility bills, and to receive rental income distribution.
The largest commercial bank in Thailand and the most consistently accessible for foreign nationals. The Boat Avenue branch in Bang Tao is specifically experienced with expat account openings and is the branch most American Phuket buyers use. Staff turnover is lower than most branches.
The best English-language mobile app of any Thai bank. Allows international transfers, bill payments, and account management without visiting a branch. The Boat Avenue and Central Phuket branches are more foreigner-experienced.
The FATCA form is mandatory. Every Thai bank is legally required to collect and report US account holder information to the IRS. Refusing to provide your SSN will result in the account being declined.
Keep your primary US checking at Charles Schwab. Their High Yield Investor Checking reimburses all foreign ATM fees worldwide at the true interbank rate. For Americans living in Phuket, the Schwab card saves $50–100/month versus a typical US bank debit card.
For living expenses transferred from US to Thailand, use Wise (formerly TransferWise) rather than a bank wire. US bank wire: $25–45 per transfer plus 2–4% markup. Wise: $15–40 flat plus mid-market rate. Exception: your property purchase transfer should go as a direct bank wire to ensure the FET documentation is properly issued.
Can I open a Thai bank account as a tourist?
Technically possible but increasingly difficult. A Non-Immigrant visa or LTR Card significantly improves your chances. The Bangkok Bank Boat Avenue branch is your best option if you are on a tourist visa.
